Grant maker accused of showing 'blatant disregard' for responsibilities

Grant making body the Macbeth Memorial Trust has been issued with an official warning and criticised for failing to submit accounts for the last four years worth of operations.

The Glasgow based Trust, which operates throughout Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, last submitted accounts were for the year ending December 2017.

“Despite repeated engagement by the regulator,” the Trust’s accounts for 2018 through to 2020 remain overdue, said the Charity Commission. Its financial reporting is now overdue by 960 days, it added.

According to the Commission the Official Warning is issued when “there has been a breach of trust or duty, or other misconduct and mismanagement in a charity”.

“The trustees of the Macbeth Memorial Trust have shown a blatant disregard for their legal duties and responsibilities,” said the Commission’s assistant director of casework Tracy Howarth.

“It is vital that charities are transparent about their activities and spending. Submitting annual reports to us is a crucial tool for holding charities to account.”

The trust was registered as a charity in 2016 and hands out grants to other charities and supports a wide range of causes such as poverty relief and the arts.
