Three arrests made amid ‘large-scale theft' of charity clothes donations

Essex Police have arrested three people during its investigation into the “large-scale theft of clothes donated to charity”.

Officers made the arrests after a warrant was issued to search an industrial unit in Purfleet.

A 48-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of money laundering and two men – aged 38 and 31 – were also arrested on suspicion of going equipped to steal.

All three have been bailed until 28 June while the police continue their enquiries.

During their search of the unit officers found around £38,000 in cash, washing machines, industrial scales, conveyor belts, cages and a forklift as well as sacks containing clothes and items, which were “stacked to the ceiling and were four or more deep in places”.

Clothes, shoes, toys and prams found were believed to have been stolen from charity donation bins, says Essex Police.

“This type of theft is complex,” said PC Jacob George.

“Our communities expect that when they make a donation, it reaches the people it was intended for, that it will be used for good and will be given to some of the most deserving people in society.”

Essex Police added: “Although we continue to progress the investigation, we believe some of the goods located were destined to be sold abroad.

“We would encourage people to continue to donate clothes and items of need to charities, but please report anything suspicious."
