TikTok launches donation tool alongside $10m funding

TikTok has launched a new donation tool to help charities raise funds during Covid-19.

The video-sharing platform has today launched 'donation stickers', a new in-app feature allowing people to raise money for charities of their choice through videos and live streams.

TikTok announced it will match user donations made through the stickers up to $10m (around £8m) until 27 May.

According to the company, the donation stickers are interactive and can be embedded directly in videos and TikTok live streams. When a user taps on the sticker, they will be guided to a pop-up window where they submit a donation to the chosen charity.

The app has partnered with a number of organisations supporting vulnerable groups that have been affected by the health and economic damage caused by the pandemic.

TikTok UK general manager, Rich Waterworth said TikTok has already been involved in the response to Covid-19 with a £5m donation to the RCN Foundation, to provide "emergency funding to hundreds of frontline health and social care workers".

"Now we want to go further to help more charities gain access to the funding they need to support people both now and beyond the coronavirus epidemic.”

TikTok users will be able to donate to the following charities:

CDC Foundation
James Beard Foundation
Meals on Wheels
MusiCares
National PTA
National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF)
No Kid Hungry
The Actors Fund
