Charity Times Awards 2020: Winners revealed

Hubbub Foundation UK, Create (Arts) and Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex were among the big winners at the Charity Times Awards 2020, which was celebrated online last night.

Hundreds of people tuned in to see AAKSS crowned the Charity of the Year (income over £10m), while Hubbub Foundation UK took home the prize for Charity of the Year (income of £1-5m) and Create (Arts) topped the under £1m category.

This year, consultant Martha Awojobi was presented with the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award.

Awojobi has played a vital role in challenging the charity sector on its lack of diversity, particularly at leadership level and was praised for her role in curating the first ever BAME fundraising conference.

She has been hailed as one of the leaders of the ‘black revolution, sweeping across our sector’, and was described by judges as a ‘total game-changer’ at a critically important time for both the sector, and society as a whole.

ClientEarth CEO, James Thornton was named Charity Leader of the Year for demonstrating 'outstanding leadership of a globally and ever more vital charity'. Judges said they were 'totally in awe of his work' and were 'overwhelmed with admiration'.

Vision Foundation CEO, Olivia Cunro was named Rising Leader of the Year, hailed as ‘one to watch by the judges. The panel was impressed with her ability to keep beneficiaries at the heart of the transformation of her charity, whilst navigating some complex challenges to help move the organisation forward.

The award for Supporting Executive of the Year was given to Navjeet Sira of the Change Foundation. Judges said she has grown up in the organisation she works for and has continued to 'completely transform it'.

Now in their 21st year, the awards attracted hundreds of high quality entries, which were then evaluated by an expert independent judging panel.

In addition to the charity of the year and individual categories, the awards as always set out to recognise a variety of fields of charity management, celebrating the best standards of leadership and professionalism.
