Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal sees online giving boost amid Covid-19

The Royal British Legion attracted 20 times more online donations during this year’s Covid-19 impacted Poppy Appeal than last year, according to latest figures.

The charity’s online fundraising agency WPNC Digital has revealed that more than 13,500 online donations an hour were received on Remembrance Sunday alone, earlier this month.

In total there were 20 times the number of online donations, compared to last year.

For this year’s pandemic-impacted event, supporters were encouraged to give online due to a reduction in the number of face-to-face collections.

“We needed to adapt the Poppy Appeal significantly this year and develop initiatives for people to still be able to support and obtain a poppy to display,” said Royal British Legion head of supporter acquisition Gillian Baxter.

“Online donations were crucial to the Appeal and have surpassed our expectations. WPNC has capably and efficiently handled our requirements, ensuring the sites were optimised, stable and closely monitored.”

WPNC Digital managing director digital Vicky Reeves added: “We know supporters are increasingly comfortable with digital donations and it’s great that we could offer them a range of options, especially when it has been more difficult to donate in person.”
