Two religious charities linked by a trustee are being investigated by the Charity Commission amid potential misconduct concerns.
The regulator has launched statutory inquiries into two Jewish education charities Schwarzschild Foundation and Dalaid, which share the same board member, Maurice Levenson.
Levenson is chair of poverty relief and Jewish education charity Dalaid and among three trustees at Schwarzschild Foundation, which provides poverty relief to orthodox Jewish women and girls.
The Commission’s investigation into the Foundation will look at conflicts of interest, whether there has been unauthorised trustee benefit and whether trustees have met their legal duties. In addition, this inquiry will look at whether the charity’s funds have been used exclusively for charitable purposes and whether there has been misconduct and mismanagement of the charity.
Meanwhile, the Dalaid investigation will focus on whether there has been “appropriate administration and oversight of grants, which is the charity’s main activity”. This will also consider whether there has been misconduct and mismanagement, trustees have complied with their legal duties and that funds have been used for charitable purposes.
We’ve opened an inquiry into Dalaid following concerns about the charity’s governance, including whether its trustees have complied with their legal duties and can fully account for the charity’s funds.
