DEC’s Turkey and Syria Earthquake appeal raises £93m

The Disasters Emergency Committee’s fundraising appeal to support victims of this month’s earthquakes in Turkey and Syria has raised £93m, less than two weeks after it launched.

The appeal by the coalition of aid charities, including Christian Aid, tearfund, Plan International and Oxfam, was launched on 9 February and raised more than £32m in just one day.

This includes match funding from the UK government and Big Give fundraising platform.

Within two days the total raised for the DEC appeal was £52m rising to £74 within a week of launching.

Money raised s is funding work such as Oxfam’s provision of clean water to survivors in Syria. Its water trucks are delivering thousands of litres of water to people in affected communities.

Also raising money for DEC’s appeal is the Glastonbury Festival, which is offering tickets to the event in a prize draw. Since launching on 15 February, the campaign, which is also being run with Oxfam, has raised more than £700,000 so far. The competition is open for entries until 12noon on 8 March and people can enter multiple times.

So far 44,00 people have died and many thousands of others have been left injured. An estimated 18m people live in the affected area, “many of them in urgent need of shelter, food and medical aid” said the DEC.

“Immediate priorities are search and rescue, medical treatment for the injured, shelter for those who have lost their homes, heaters for spaces and winter kits with blankets, and warm clothes, and ensuring people have food and clean water,” it added.
