Autism charity creates new director role following education services expansion

Ambitious about Autism has created the new post of director of property and IT to support its “growing network of schools and colleges”, the charity has announced.

The role has been filled by Michael Michaelides, who joins from the further education sector. He has spent the last 11 years at West Thames College, including nine years as its executive director resources and student experience.

The charity says his role has been created following a period of expansion for its school and college services.

In September, Ambitious about Autism merged with Brighton-based charity St. John’s College, which became the charity’s first education setting outside London.

“The primary focus of my role is to lead the development of our existing and new education services to support and create opportunities for autistic children and young people and I am really excited to have joined the team at such an important time,” said Michaelides.

Meanwhile, the charity has also recruited former RAF helicopter crew member Mark Ospedale as its director of people and culture. The role had previous been covered by an interim director and had been vacant since May.

Ospedale spent 12 years as a helicopter crew member until 2000 and joins from United Response, where he had stints as director of corporate services, of people and communications, and human resources.

They form part of an eight strong leadership team.

“We are delighted to have both Mark and Michael join us as we continue to grow as a charity and deliver vital services to autistic children and young people across the country,” said Ambitious about Autism chief executive Jolanta Lasota.

“Their expertise and experience will play a significant role in ensuring our staff and services continue to thrive.”
