Action for Children promotes Scotland director to CEO

Action for Children has announced that its national director for Scotland Paul Carberry will be its first permanent chief executive since 2020.

He takes the top role having been with the charity for almost 30 years, joining as a project leader in Scotland in 1994.

Carberry takes over from Melanie Armstrong who announced earlier this year she would be stepping down having taken the interim CEO role in March 2020. She was previously the charity’s managing director of corporate shared services.

“Paul is well placed to take the organisation forward. He knows our charity well and has built up a huge wealth of experience across Children’s Services as National Director for Scotland and also as National Director for England,” said the charity’s chair Sarika Patel.

“The Trustees and I are very grateful to Melanie who took on the role in 2020. She has steered the charity through the pandemic, led on stabilising our finances and has overseen the introduction of our new strategy to ensure our vital work continues with children, young people and families.”

The charity’s last permanent chief executive was Julie Bentley, who was appointed to the top role at Samaritans two years ago.
