WINNERS ANNOUNCED – Charity Times Awards 2016

Refuge was among the big winners at the Charity Times Awards 2016, celebrated with a packed ceremony in London last night.

More than 700 people gathered at the Westminster Park Plaza to see Refuge crowned the Charity of the Year (income over £10m). The judges recognised the charity in particular for its dedicated focus on beneficiaries, maintained in a very difficult funding environment.

Tyne Gateway Trust, a Newcastle-based charity tackling child poverty, was named Charity of the Year (income of less than £1m) for its tight focus on its service users’ needs.

Bowel Cancer UK won Charity of the Year (with income between £1m and £10m). The charity’s big impact and clear goals for the future saw it top a very competitive category. SignHealth received a high commendation for its excellent work.

Leading fundraising thinker and practitioner Tony Elischer was recognised with the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award.

Elischer, who passed away in January, was recognised for his dedicated and unique contribution to fundraising, which saw his expertise frequently called upon through the business he founded in 2001, THINK Consulting Solutions. Elischer was also in demand nationally and worldwide as an engaging and popular conference speaker.

Kisharon chief executive Dr Beverly Jacobson was named Charity Principal of the Year after leading a remarkable turnaround at the organisation, which judges said was characterised by clear direction and clear delivery.

Anna Smee topped the Rising CEO Star category, after driving a strong recovery for UK Youth since taking over as chief executive in 2014. Ruth Hunt was highly commended for her exemplary leadership of Stonewall.

Now in their 17th year, the awards attracted hundreds of high quality entries which were then evaluated by an expert independent judging panel.

In addition to the charity of the year and individual categories, the awards as always set out to recognise a variety of fields of charity management, celebrating the best standards of leadership and professionalism.

The Charity Times Awards also recognise the efforts of private enterprises in supporting the sector, whether through charity partnerships or delivering excellent service.
