The UK has fallen out of the top 10 most generous countries in the world for the first time in 12 years, according to latest research.

Charities Aid Foundation’s 2021 World Giving Index has found that the Covid-19 pandemic has radically altered giving trends globally.

While giving has fallen in many rich, Norther Hemisphere countries, it has increased among a number of Southern hemisphere countries.

The UK hds been in the top 10 most generous countries globally in the Index, since it launched in 2009.

But the latest list saw the UK move from 7th when the Index was last published in 2018 place to 22nd in 2020.

The index measures giving in terms of helping strangers who need help, donating money and volunteering.

In terms of specifically donating money the UK, Iceland and Netherlands are still among the top countries. “However, each country has seen a significant decrease in the proportion of people making donations,” the report found.

The UK has been in the World Giving Top 10 since the list began in 2009, but 2020 saw it tumble from 7th place to 22nd place.

Other Northern hemisphere countries to see a fall in giving include , the US, Canada, and Ireland, which had regularly featured in the top 10 over the last decade.

Australia and New Zealand have also seen a decline but remain in top 10, the only high income countries to do so.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is ranked top of the Index, where more than eight in 10 Indonesians donated and the country’s volunteering rate is more than three times the global average.

Other countries to appear in the top 10 for the first time include Nigera and Ghana.

The change in giving trends globally comes amid a pandemic-hit year, which saw an increase globally in donating, up from 27% in 2018 to 31% in 2020.
