Food bank charity Trussell Trust has partnered with meal delivery service Deliveroo to collect food parcels ahead of Christmas for vulnerable families impacted by the cost-of-living crisis.
The ‘Collecteroo’ service has been launched amid increasing demand for the Trust’s food bank services as well as an increase in food donations over the festive period.
The delivery service says more than half (58%) of UK people feel “more charitable and are more likely to donate” at this time of year. It also says that seven in ten people have unopened food items in their cupboards at home.
The service launches in five UK cities, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff and Glasgow.
Through the initiative Deliveroo vans will collect unopened and in date food from people’s homes and deliver them to the Trust’s food banks in these cities between December 12-17.
Those who want to donate can book a collection by 28 November.
The collection service is part of a nationwide partnership between Deliveroo and the Trussell Trust which launched in April. This has included a donation function in the delivery firm’s app to enable customers to round up their orders and give to the charity.

“Food banks in the Trussell Trust network are facing their toughest winter yet and expect to distribute more than 1.3 million emergency food parcels over the next six months – more than half a million of these parcels will be for children,” said Trussell Trust director of network programmes and innovation Danni Malone.
“This drastic increase in need means that food banks are currently distributing more food than they are receiving, and this is placing significant pressure on them at a time when they’re also struggling with rising operational costs including energy bills and petrol prices.
“All of these factors mean that we need donations more than ever before and are therefore delighted to be working with Deliveroo on their collection campaign this winter.
“The Collecteroo initiative will make a real difference to our food banks in these cities by making it easier to donate and helping to ensure that they have the stock they need to keep going this winter.”
Deliveroo founder Will Shu added: “Our research highlights that people have food in their cupboards that they would like to donate, so working closely with the Trussell Trust, our Collecteroo service will help make it easier for people to donate by connecting local residents to local food banks.
