House of Commons deputy speaker takes role at The Seafarers Charity

The House of Commons deputy speaker Nusrat Ghani has been appointed vice-president of The Seafarers’ Charity.

The Conservative MP for Sussex Weald and former maritime minister during Theresa May’s and Boris Johnson’s premierships, will take up the post at the charity’s annual meeting in June.

As maritime minister she was involved in setting up the global shipping emissions reductions plan Maritime 2050.

Among her first engagements for the charity will be to speak at its Waves of Influence event in July to celebrate women in the maritime sector.

“Seafarers make such a huge contribution to the UK, and around the world,” said Ghani, who is also a former trustee of the charity.

“They keep supply chains running, protect our interests, and are a real part of our history.

“Seafarers are unseen key workers who can also struggle with challenges around mental health caused by pressures from being away from home for long periods of time and I’m keen to do what I can to support our seafarers and the charity in its vital work.”

The charity’s chief executive Deborah Layde added: “Nusrat was an excellent trustee, and we’re thrilled to have her back as one of our vice presidents.

“Her track record in supporting seafarers across the maritime sector speaks for itself, and I know the charity will benefit from her experience and insights during her tenure.”
