The Fundraising Regulator has appointed a former criminal investigator to be its first head of proactive regulation and projects.
Jim Tebbett, who is a former benefits investigations officer at Brighton and Hove Council, takes the role that has been created to “monitor and promote sector compliance” with fundraising standards, said the regulator.
“Jim will develop and lead a number of significant projects, ensuring the team is well-positioned to deliver a risk and intelligence-led programme of work to explore emerging or unaddressed issues about charity fundraising so they can be addressed before they crystallise,” the regulator added.
Tebbett also spent almost two years as a self-employed contractor assessing housing and council tax benefit claims for other councils.
He joins from the Advertising Standards Authority, where he spent 11 years leading proactive projects, including using data science and machine learning in monitoring and enforcement.
Fundraising regulator chief executive Gerald Oppenheim praised Tebbett’s “extensive background within regulation” adding that he “brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience”.
Tebbett said: “I am thrilled to join the Fundraising Regulator as head of proactive regulation and projects. This is a wonderful opportunity to develop this area and explore key issues within the fundraising sector.
“I look forward to working closely with colleagues and stakeholders alike so that we can continue to build public trust and confidence and ensure consistently high fundraising standards across the UK.”
