Citizens Advice CEO steps down after a decade in the role

The chief executive of Citizens Advice is to stand down after a decade in the role to join the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Dame Gillian Guy is to become the Independent Assessor for the financial watchdog at the end of October.

Guy joined the charity as chief executive in July 2010, having previously held the same role at Victim Support. She was awarded a CBE in 2015 for services to consumers and in this year’s New Year’s honours list she was made a Dame for services to public and charity sectors

She said: “I feel immensely proud and privileged to have played a part in this essential and greatly treasured service. It has proved resilient in the face of challenge, innovative, and relentlessly focused on the needs of individuals and communities

“I have been fortunate to work with people of passion, commitment and talent, who, with the service itself, have been at the core of my life for the last decade.

“I am confident that Citizens Advice will continue to go from strength to strength, helping millions of people overcome their challenges in the decades to come.”

The charity’s chief operating officer Alistair Cromwell is to take on the role of acting chief executive while Citizens Advice looks for a replacement.

"Over the coming months I will work closely with Gillian to ensure a smooth handover,” said Cromwell.

“My priorities will be to continue the essential work Citizens Advice has been doing to help people navigate the worst impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, while keeping up the momentum on the delivery of our three-year strategy to meet the changing needs of the people who come to us for help."

Citizens Advice chair Warren Buckley added: “It’s been an honour to work closely with Gillian as she has led Citizens Advice through significant and successful change. Gillian leaves Citizens Advice stronger, more resilient and more prepared to deal with whatever the future brings. I would like to thank Gillian on behalf of the national trustee board of Citizens Advice for her amazing contribution, and wish her well for the future.”

In her new role at the Financial Ombudsman she will review complaints about the service provided by the watchdog.
