Scottish government environment expert takes top role at charity regulator

The Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) has appointed Katriona Carmichael as its next chief executive.

She joins in July from the Scottish government’s environment and forestry directorate, where she is currently deputy director for circular economy.

“Katriona has significant experience in leadership roles within the public sector, and particularly impressed the interview and staff engagement panels with her communication and leadership skills, her passion for the role at OSCR as well as for the charity sector and her clear understanding of the positive impact of regulation done well,” said the regulator’s chair Marieke Dwarshuis.

Carmichael takes over from Maureen Mallon, who is retiring at the end of June.

Dwarshuis added: "We are immensely grateful to Maureen Mallon for her dedicated work over the past five years.

“During this time, she has led the organisation successfully through a period of tremendous challenge, including overseeing a successful restructure of our operations and guiding us though the COVID-19 pandemic, all of which has helped us to emerge stronger and ready for the next chapter of OSCR’s story.

"We began the process to find a new CEO last year. I’m grateful for the positive contributions of all the staff, board members and others who have supported a thorough and challenging recruitment process over the past few months.”
