More than 350km commuting ‘challenge’ leads to charity CEO’s departure

Alex Brooks-Johnson is stepping down as Tinnitus UK’s chief executive citing the “particular challenge” of leading a charity based more than 350km from his home.

Since he was appointed 18 months ago Sussex coast-based Brooks-Johnson has been leading the Sheffield based charity by remote working and spending time away from his young family.

He said: “Leaving Tinnitus UK was a tremendously difficult decision to make, especially as we are seeing the positive impact of all the changes and rebuilding which has taken place in the past 18 months.”

Brooks-Johnson, who is to step down around Easter, added: “I would like to say how grateful I am for the support I have received personally since I have been at Tinnitus UK.

"The team have been brilliant to work with, and their dedication and passion know no bounds. What they achieve as a small team is nothing short of astounding.

“I will miss the volunteers, partners, support group leaders and the tinnitus community, all bound by a common goal of wanting better outcomes for people with tinnitus.

“It has been a brief but important part of my career, and I will remember it fondly and with an over-whelming sense of achievement.”

The charity has started the search for a replacement.

It’s chair Pierre Espinasse said: “While we are sad to see Alex go, this is a great opportunity for us to think about the future and recruiting a new leader to help take us forward.”

Prior to joining Tinnitus UK Brooks-Johnson was CEO at Worthing based Guild Care.
