Interactive portal launches ‘to bring to life’ long running charity trends study

Researchers behind the Third Sector Trends study, which launched almost two decades ago, have launched an online resource to increase awareness and accessibility of its findings.

This interactive portal uses data visualisation tools that aim to “bring to life key findings from the study” that covers the charity sector in England and Wales, say researchers.

Previously its research was communicated through regular reports.

“It's a treasure trove for the sector, for funders, for researchers and for policy-makers – who need to take heed of the economic as well as the social value of what charities and community organisations do across the country,” said Rob Williamson, chief executive of Community Foundation North East, which is responsible for running the study along with St Chad’s College, Durham University

The study is led by Professor Tony Chapman, director of research, policy and practice at St Chad’s College, and funded by Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales, WCVA and Millfield House Foundation.

It also has a focus on North East England as well as looking at regional differences across the country.

Further breakdowns of staffing and volunteer levels, social impact and communities service are also available.

The research project started in 2010 and is repeated every three years. It is the largest and longest running study of the voluntary sector in England and Wales.
