Deadline for Charity Governance Code consultation looms

Charities have until the weekend to give their views on an overhaul of the Charity governance Code.

The consultation closes on 11 August and is asking for views from charities on the code’s structure, applicability to different sizes of charity as well as its use of language.

Views on its user-friendliness and barriers to using the code are also being looked at.

The code’s steering group includes sector bodies Acevo, NCVO, Association of Chairs and the Chartered Governance Institute (CGI).

CGI policy adviser Emily Ford says the Code was last updated four years ago “and we all know just how much the world has changed since then”.

She said to charities that “this is your chance to make the Charity Governance Code work for you. Whether you use the Code or not, and whatever size or type of charity you represent, we want to hear from you”.

The Code covers governance issues including organisational purpose, integrity, decision-making, risk and control, board effectiveness, equality diversity and inclusion (EDI) and transparency.

Two versions of the Code are produced, one for charities with an annual turnover of £1 million or more and another for smaller charities
