A charity in Wales has secured funding to create Wales's largest rewilding project.
Tir Nature has acquired the 1,195-acre site over parts of the Doethïe Valley in the Cambrian Mountains following a fundraising campaign, which has raised more than half of the £2.2m needed to buy the land.
It has also acquired the land using a philanthropic bridging loan that "has enabled us to secure the site while fundraising continues, allowing essential rewilding and community activities to begin without delay,” said the charity.
“We are incredibly grateful to all who have helped us reach this critical milestone.”
A fundraiser to start work on the site has launched, with the first £31,250 being doubled “thanks to a generous community founding member”.
Community founding members are those who have donated between £5,000 and £10,000 towards the purchase of the land, which would aid the recovery of between three and six acres.
The charity points out that the size of the land is equivalent to 121 Principality Stadiums.
It added: “This is a national moment for Wales. An opportunity to demonstrate rewilding's potential here, at scale. And the work starts now.”
