A charity in Scotland has cancelled its golden anniversary charity ball as its supporters “have told us that they cannot afford to buy tickets”.
Perth and Kinross Association of Voluntary Service (PKAVS) had been planning to stage the event this year to mark 50 years of supporting the local community
But it has been forced to cancel the event after supporters told the charity they “are concerned about what the coming months will bring and are reluctant to spend money when the future is so uncertain”, PKAVS said in a statement.
“For many of our beneficiaries, budgeting and managing money is an enormous worry and can be detrimental to their wellbeing,” it added.
“While promoting our Charity Ball, talking to those we support, and listening to people throughout Perthshire, it has become clear that the cost-of-living crisis is the biggest challenge that they have faced in decades.
“Whilst it is a disappointment for us as an organisation that our celebration will not take place, the precarious months ahead are of much greater significance, and how that will impact the individuals, families, and communities we readily engage with is our overriding priority.”
This month inflation reached double digits for the first time in 40 years. The consumer price index in July was 10.1% according to the Office of National Statistics.
The Bank of England has warned inflation could peak at more than 13% next year.
Pro Bono Economics economist Jamie O’Halloran has warned that charities are facing “an all hands-on deck crisis” as they tackle their own rising costs, increasing demand for support and dwindling income as supporters struggle to pay their bills.
